Contriving Little Objects

My chosen concept was looking at creating a collection of objects that appeared strange and distorted. For this I created ‘little objects’, playing with textures and forms. Each object was created to evoke a different reaction. Looking at how it could possibly change how we interact with everyday items. With the use of colour they appeared garish and cartoon like but when I painted them white it changed the way people looked at the form and texture. From this I learned that colour was going to play a very important role in my design. I began to generate ways I could create discomfort. Looking at space, objects and experience I wanted to distort places where we find comfort. By subverting their meaning to create an alien experience for people. What happens when our interior spaces are covered with spikes? Throughout the development stage I used a process of making small prototypes using foam materials and colour to create versions of my ‘little objects’. Taking the form of everyday furniture and distorting it’s comfort. Covering them with spikes and triangular forms to create a discomforting texture. This helped me to visualise what my objects might look like and led to the process of creating a contrast between the visual and physical aspects of objects.
